Water Shutoff Reminders

 Winter 2014-2015

Our water usage this year has been greater than previous years due to an unacceptable number of leaks.  In order to prevent leaks and assure proper maintenance of our water system, the QEBWA Board has made the following policy decisions:

·         The curb stop locations of all homes must be clearly marked by the homeowner with the stake QEBWA provides.

·         The curb stop cover must be maintained by the homeowner to assure easy access and be clear of debris.  Locating curb stops and digging them out of the snow is bad enough, but when they are buried in grass or frozen gravel, they are nearly impossible to shut off in an emergency.  If you need a curb stop cover please contact a Board Member.

·         It is required that the water be shutoff in all unoccupied homes.  If you are going to be gone for more than a few days turn the water off.

·         All exterior plumbing should be shutoff and drained between October 15 and April 30 to prevent freezing.

·         The preferred water shutoff location is in a frost free area of your home.  This location permits the homeowner to readily turn the water on and off.

·         If no suitable frost free location is possible, the water must be turned off at the curb stop.  Board members can help you with this.

·         Curb stop valves are sometimes difficult to operate and result in leaks.  If you turn off the water at the curb stop, notify Pete Ogle (peteogle@cox.net) so that it can be checked for leaks.

·         If you are heating your unoccupied home during the winter, you must arrange to have someone check your home frequently.  Many furnaces and water heaters will slowly loose water and need to be replenished periodically.  Please let QEBWA know who this caretaker is so we can communicate with them in an emergency.

QEBWA will be issuing fines starting at $250 if a water leak of over 1000 gallons is found at your home.
